Our Shops

St John's Hospice shares in the ownership of three charity shops in the Lancaster and Morecambe area.

The shops operation is shared with the local cancer support charity, CancerCare, and both charities receive 50% each of the profits. This is vital income allowing us both to support those who access our services. The shops are mainly staffed by volunteers, whose time is most valuable to us.

You can help us through our shops in a number of ways:

By volunteering your time. Just a few hours a week, or a fortnight, helps to make a difference in the running of the 3 shops.

By donating good quality goods. The goods that help us most are:- Ladies and Gents clothing but it must be clean and in first class order. Furniture must have a fire safety label if it is upholstered, and must be in good order, (the van drivers make the decision once seen).

Please be mindful that if goods are not of a sufficient quality to sell, we have to dispose of them for recycling, or even pass them on for tipping. Either way, their value to us is limited, or actually costs us money to dispose of - so please, none of the following:- Broken or unboxed toys, Cuddly toys without a CE label, Real Fur, Dirty clothes, Safety/Riding helmets, Electric Blankets, Heat Lamps, Microwave ovens, White Goods, Personal electric items (shavers,hair removers etc), Computer equipment, Nursery Equipment(unless new), Jumble sale or car boot sale items. We do, however, have the ability to accept some serviceable electrical goods.

Free collection can be arranged though our drivers (please phone one of the shops), but please be aware that they may be reluctant to accept goods that are considered unsaleable, and may refuse to collect it.

Please also help us by refraining from leaving goods outside our shops' doors when outside of normal opening hours, as this can cause obstruction to the thoroughfare and may encourage theft or vandalism.

By buying goods. In these 'credit crunched' times, bargains are still to be had and you will also be helping us immensely.
