The team offer specialist and generalist courses in palliative care to the community health care teams (Jenny Lowe’s remit) as well as to in-house staff and health professionals on placement at the hospice (Marie Rodden’s remit).

This includes specialist and generalist palliative care courses for all in-house staff including; registered nurses, Allied health professionals (physios, OT’s etc), auxiliary nurses, all pre-registered student nurses, post registered nurses and medical students (some teaching sessions only) on placement at the hospice, (Doctor Watt is the co-ordinator for the medical students placement).

Jenny and Marie Rodden both develop mandatory training sessions for in-house staff; Marie covers infection control and blood transfusion competencies (to begin 2009), Jenny covers communication skills. This is alongside other members of the wider hospice team who teach manual handling and fire procedures. In summary, Jenny and Marie work as educational resources for all levels of nursing staff Jenny in the community and Marie mainly within the hospice.

Venue for in house courses
We have several educational areas within the main hospice, a seminar room, a conference room and a large lounge area. We have all the educational tools necessary for teaching, such as PowerPoint, projectors, screens TV/DVD Players, Flip Charts, and access to the Internet.

Cost of courses
All courses are free for in house staff, for most courses/lectures provided by the hospice education team a minimum of £10 is charged.
